NDIS Wheelchair FAQ

Everything you need to know about buying a wheelchair or mobility aid with your NDIS funding. Updated for 2026.

Can I buy a wheelchair online with my NDIS funding?

Yes. If you are self-managed or plan-managed, you can purchase from any supplier, including online stores like Mobility Concierge. You do not need to use a registered NDIS provider. Agency-managed participants must use registered providers only.

Do I need an OT assessment to buy a wheelchair?

Items over approximately $1,500 typically require an Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment and written recommendation. For standard manual wheelchairs, walking aids, and accessories under $1,500, you generally do not need an OT report. Read our OT assessment guide.

What NDIS support item numbers cover wheelchairs?

Wheelchairs fall under Assistive Technology support items. Manual wheelchairs typically use codes starting with 05_060601, while powered wheelchairs use 05_060604. See our complete cheat sheet.

How do I pay for a wheelchair with NDIS funding?

Self-managed: Pay upfront, then claim reimbursement through the NDIS portal using your invoice. Plan-managed: We send an NDIS-compliant invoice to your plan manager, who pays us directly. Compare self-managed vs plan-managed.

Is Mobility Concierge a registered NDIS provider?

We are not a registered NDIS provider. However, self-managed and plan-managed participants (approximately 75% of all NDIS participants) can purchase from us without any restrictions.

Are wheelchairs GST-free?
