OT Assessment and Wheelchair Prescription FAQ

When you need an OT, what they assess, and how wheelchair prescriptions work with NDIS funding.

Do I need an OT assessment to buy a wheelchair?

Items under approximately $1,500 can often be purchased without an OT assessment as low-cost AT. Higher-value items like powered wheelchairs typically require an OT assessment. Read our full OT assessment guide.

What does an OT assess for wheelchair prescription?

An OT evaluates your physical capabilities, posture, daily activities, home environment, and transport needs. They measure your body dimensions and assess pressure-relief requirements to match you with the most appropriate wheelchair.

How do I find an OT who does wheelchair assessments?

Ask your support coordinator or plan manager for a referral. Search the OT Australia directory or contact local disability services. Look for OTs with assistive technology or seating experience. Mobile OTs can visit your home.

How much does an OT wheelchair assessment cost?

Typically $200-$500 depending on complexity. This is fundable through your NDIS plan under Capacity Building, Improved Daily Living.

What does the OT report include?

A wheelchair prescription report includes your diagnosis and functional needs, body measurements, recommended wheelchair specifications, specific product recommendations with quotes, and justification for why the equipment is necessary.

Can I choose my own wheelchair?

The OT recommends equipment based on clinical assessment, but you have choice. If you prefer a different model that meets the same clinical requirements, discuss it with your OT. Compare wheelchair types.

How long is an OT report valid?

There is no fixed expiry, but the NDIS generally expects assessments to be within 12 months. If your needs have changed significantly, a new assessment may be required.

Can an OT prescribe equipment from Mobility Concierge?

Yes. OTs can recommend products from any supplier. We provide OTs with product specifications, pricing, and quotes. Email us at info@mobilityconcierge.com.au.

What if I disagree with the OT recommendation?

You can request a second opinion from another OT. You can also discuss your concerns directly. The NDIS funds what is reasonable and necessary, so the recommendation needs clinical justification.

Do I need a new OT assessment to replace an old wheelchair?

If replacing like-for-like and your needs have not changed, a brief review letter from your OT may suffice. For a different type of wheelchair, a new assessment is typically required.

Can the OT visit my home?

Yes. Many OTs offer home-visit assessments, which are preferable as they can assess your actual living environment. Home visits are funded under your NDIS plan.
