Wheelchair Funding Without NDIS
Not on the NDIS? Options for funding wheelchairs and mobility equipment through Aged Care, DVA, and state government programs.
I am over 65. Can I get NDIS funding for a wheelchair?
Generally no. People over 65 are not eligible for new NDIS plans. Instead, you may be eligible for aged care funding through Home Care Packages, CHSP, or state-based equipment programs. Read our full over-65 funding guide.
How does the Home Care Package program fund wheelchairs?
Home Care Packages (Levels 1-4) include funding for assistive technology. Level 1 provides around $9,000/year and Level 4 around $53,000/year. Your package provider can approve wheelchair purchases from your budget.
What is the CHSP and does it cover wheelchairs?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme provides entry-level support for older Australians. It can fund basic mobility aids including manual wheelchairs and walking frames. Contact My Aged Care (1800 200 422) for an assessment.
Can DVA fund a wheelchair?
Yes. The Department of Veterans Affairs funds mobility equipment through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP). Veterans with a Gold Card or White Card can access wheelchair funding. Read our DVA funding guide.
What are state-based equipment programs?
NSW: EnableNSW. VIC: SWEP. QLD: Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS). SA: DHS Equipment Program. WA: Community Aids and Equipment Program. TAS: Community Equipment Scheme. Eligibility and funding vary by state.
Can I combine funding from multiple programs?
In some cases, yes. You might use CHSP for a basic wheelchair and a state program for accessories. However, you generally cannot claim the same item from two programs.
I am not eligible for any programs. What are my options?
You can purchase equipment privately. We have a range of products under $100 and products under $250. Some charitable organisations also provide mobility equipment grants.
How do I apply for My Aged Care services?
Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit myagedcare.gov.au. You will be screened and referred for assessment. CHSP uses Regional Assessment Service (RAS). Home Care Packages require an ACAT visit.
Can I buy from Mobility Concierge with aged care funding?
Yes. Home Care Package providers can purchase from any supplier. We provide itemised invoices suitable for aged care billing. Browse our range.
What is the difference between NDIS and aged care for mobility equipment?
The NDIS is typically more generous and flexible. Aged care programs have smaller budgets and may limit choices to approved lists. Compare all Australian funding options.
